CO2Sense has invested £300,000 in a hydroelectric plant in North Wales. The plant will produce over 3 million kWh of electricity each year, enough to power 720 homes.
The system uses relatively small amounts of water taken from two small rivers, and maximises the height over which the water falls (the head) to make the most of the power available from the rivers. The penstocks and pipes used in the installation will be underground, meaning that there will be very little visual evidence of the plant.
The plant is at an early stage of construction, but is due to be completed in 2013. It will earn around £350,000 per year from the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and cut carbon emissions by 1595.5 tonnes per year. CO2Sense’s investments do not have to be repaid until the project is making an income. The money will then be used by
CO2Sense to invest in more renewable energy projects.
