CO2Sense invested £200,000 in Green Frog Power to help set up their power plant

About this project

Green Frog Power based in Hull was commissioned in March 2010. Once fully operational, the plant will save 124,000 tonnes CO2 over 10 years, and is set to generate enough electricity to power 6,480 houses every year. As well generating electricity, the plant also has the opportunity to sell heat produced during the combustion process to a nearby tannery business. This will replace 70% of the gas the tannery currently consumes to generate heat for the businesses’ operations.

The Green Frog Power Plant uses Gphase, a by-product of biodiesel productions and waste from vegetable oil that has been traditionally sent to landfill.

The Gphase can usually be secured at no cost. Once Green Frog has collected the oil, it can be converted into valuable fuels. Some of this is used for energy generation, with the rest sold as a component for biodiesel production by local businesses.

“By sitting Green Frog’s plant next to other businesses with a need for heat generated by our process, we are able to further cut energy use and carbon emissions. It makes both sound financial and environmental sense."
Mr. Jeremy Taylor
MANAGING DIRECTOR – GREEN FROG POWER

There are plans to roll this technology out across the North, where a further 12 plants that could benefit from a renewable source of heat have already been identified. Green Frog Managing Director, Jeremy Taylor, says, “By sitting Green Frog’s plant next to other businesses with a need for heat generated by our process, we are able to further cut energy use and carbon emissions.” “It makes both sound financial and environmental sense.”

“Green Frog Power is turning a waste product into a high value fuel, generating electricity, and providing a heat source for a neighbouring business. It also reduces carbon emissions and reduces the need for fossil fuels. It’s a great example of how renewable energy projects make commercial and environmental sense. “

CO2Sense Principal Consultant, Jemma Benson, says, “Green Frog Power is turning a waste product into a high value fuel, generating electricity, and providing a heat source for a neighbouring business. It also reduces carbon emissions and reduces the need for fossil fuels. It’s a great example of how renewable energy projects make commercial and environmental sense.”

The plant has been built on an old, previously derelict, industrial site, and has also created 12 jobs for the region. The Hull region has a long history of oil-related businesses, and so Green Frog Power has been able to draw on this pool of expertise. The plant is producing clean electricity, whilst bringing new industry and opportunities to the area.
