Empowering Community-Led Renewable Energy in Sheffield

CO2Sense is proud to seed fund Sheffield Renewables in 2009, a volunteer-led social enterprise. Our seed funding enabled Sheffield Renewables to build the foundations for a community-driven approach to renewable energy, focusing on community ownership and action for a sustainable energy future.

CO2Sense’s initial funding allowed Sheffield Renewables to establish themselves as an organised group, helping them to develop their strategy, set up a legal structure and prepare for impactful growth. Sheffield Renewables has become a robust community energy (CE) group with a clear mission.

Today, Sheffield Renewables has made remarkable progress, delivering over 1.1 million kW of renewable energy. They have implemented projects across Sheffield, benefiting sites such as:

  • Five Rivers Co-Housing
  • Lembas Food Co-operative
  • Attercliffe Police Station
  • Swinton Fitzwilliam
  • Paces Campus

These initiatives have significantly impacted the community, creating local energy resources.

By 2024, Sheffield Renewables raised over £20,000 for community benefit programs, the majority of which support Sheffield-based projects like those at the South Yorkshire Energy Centre. Additionally, around 10% of these funds are allocated to international efforts, extending their community impact to energy poverty alleviation overseas.

Through this partnership, CO2Sense is proud to have supported a pioneering community energy model. For more information visit Sheffield Renewables website.
