Case Study

CO2Sense acquires Welsh wind project

In January 2016 CO2Sense acquired a shovel ready 500kW wind turbine project from RESense Ltd, CO2Sense’s joint venture company. The wind turbine is located in Carmarthenshire and became operational in March 2016.

The turbine has the capacity to supply 375 homes with electricity and provides the landowner with a rental income based upon revenue generated by the turbine. The scheme will also provide a local community benefit fund.

The project was acquired from RESense once it was shovel ready with planning permission, grid connection, option to lease and preliminary accreditation secured. CO2Sense secured technology supply and balance of plant agreements, worked to discharge some of the planning conditions and oversaw the build. The selected technology supplier is EWT and the balance of plant contractor for the scheme was Raymond Brown Construction Limited. The turbine became operational in March 2016 and is owned by a subsidiary of CO2Sense CIC; CO2Sense Pantycelyn Limited.

Being the first equity investment into an operational asset, the investment is a unique addition to the CO2Sense investment portfolio which consists of a range of loan types into other renewable energy projects, and equity investments into low carbon businesses. It also demonstrates CO2Sense’s expertise and knowledge in project construction and development and provides the fund with a long term income stream, enabling the team to focus on working with projects outside of clean energy generation and consider innovative new ventures.
